The government of Daniel Ortega ordered the definitive closure of 1,500 activist NGOs, mostly religious, considered agents of opposition to the government whose financing is unknown. There are more than 5,200 organizations canceled by the Nicaraguan government since the 2018 protests. Let us remember, this situation occurs in a context in which AMLO denounces the United States for financing the opposition in a letter addressed to North American President Joe Biden.
The government canceled the status of political advocacy NGOs, including organizations that defend sexual diversity, Catholic, educational, social, and retired military organizations. Likewise, the State has announced new government regulations that require NGOs to work “in alliance” with the State to execute their projects in the country.
“From now on, the NGOs that operate in Nicaragua will be governed by a new operating model that we have characterized as 'association alliances,'" said Rosario Murillo, Ortega's vice president and wife. The measures include the requirement to have government authorization for NGO work plans and projects and the elimination of tax exemptions for these entities.
FACT: In the 2018 crisis, 362 people died in protests against the regime where NGOs had, according to the government, an active and mobilizing role against the regime; Since then, Nicaraguan authorities have closed more than 5,000 NGOs, confiscating their assets, while their directors have left the country.
